Aramco and Pasqal Deploy Saudi Arabia’s First Quantum Computer, Marking Major Tech Breakthrough

Prime Highlight

  1. Aramco and Pasqal unveiled the Middle East’s first quantum computer designed for industrial use, marking a major technological milestone for Saudi Arabia.
  2. The system, featuring 200 programmable qubits, will enable advanced quantum research and applications in energy, materials, and industrial sectors.

Key Facts

  1. The quantum computer is installed at Aramco’s Dhahran data center, with Pasqal providing training and research opportunities for Saudi engineers and scientists.
  2. The project follows Aramco’s early investment in Pasqal through Wa’ed Ventures in 2023, supporting the localization of quantum technology and building a regional high-tech ecosystem.

Background

Aramco and Pasqal have launched Saudi Arabia’s first quantum computer, achieving a major technological milestone for the Kingdom and the Middle East. The system has been installed at Aramco’s data center in Dhahran and is the region’s first quantum computer designed specifically for industrial use.

Pasqal’s new machine uses neutral-atom technology and can run with 200 qubits arranged in flexible, programmable patterns. Researchers and engineers can use it to test advanced quantum algorithms and create applications for the energy, materials and industrial sectors.

Aramco said the launch supports its broader goal of adopting advanced digital tools to boost operational efficiency and drive innovation across its business. Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter, Executive Vice President of Technology & Innovation at Aramco, said the company is expanding its use of AI and other emerging technologies. He called the partnership with Pasqal a key step toward developing next-generation computing solutions that can unlock new value.

Pasqal’s CEO, Loïc Henriet, described the deployment as a historic moment for the Middle East. He said the system is the company’s most powerful quantum computer to date and signals the region’s growing interest in practical quantum technologies.

Pasqal’s presence in Saudi Arabia grew after Wa’ed Ventures, Aramco’s venture capital arm, became an early investor in the company in 2023. Since then, Pasqal has worked to localize its operations and help build a regional quantum ecosystem.

As part of the collaboration, Pasqal will train Saudi engineers and scientists and give them research opportunities. These efforts will build local talent and support the Kingdom’s goals in advanced computing and high-tech innovation.
