Background

Mowasalat (Karwa), Qatar’s top public transport company, has started the country’s first RoboTaxi service. This new service moves Qatar closer to smart, technology-driven transportation. The Ministry of Transport supervises it, and it helps achieve the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.

The RoboTaxi service introduces autonomous vehicles designed to improve passenger safety, comfort, and travel efficiency. By using advanced self-driving systems, the service aims to reduce human error while offering a smooth and reliable transport experience.

Each RoboTaxi is fitted with a comprehensive sensor system that includes eleven cameras, four radars, and four LiDAR sensors. These technologies give the vehicle complete 360-degree awareness of its surroundings. This lets the RoboTaxi detect obstacles, understand road conditions, and drive through traffic in real time.

The vehicles also have a built-in safety backup system. If a technical problem occurs, the system keeps the RoboTaxi running safely until it reaches the nearest safe place.

Mowasalat said all operational and passenger data collected through the RoboTaxi system will be stored and processed within the State of Qatar. This ensures full compliance with national data protection, cybersecurity, and data localization regulations.

The service was developed and tested in partnership with leading global autonomous technology companies. Mowasalat combined international expertise with local regulatory and operational requirements to meet high safety and performance standards.

Mowasalat shows its commitment to innovation and sustainable transport with this launch. The company said the RoboTaxi service marks an important step in shaping the future of mobility in Qatar through smart technology, safety, and service excellence.
