Background

Qatar-based telecom company Ooredoo plans to invest about $800 million for a 49% stake in Zankore, an artificial intelligence computing platform being developed in Indonesia. The investment marks Ooredoo’s expansion into AI infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

Zankore is being developed with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Nokia and NVIDIA. The platform will provide AI computing capacity to cloud and enterprise customers and aims to develop up to 1 gigawatt of NVIDIA DSX AI Factory capacity over time.

Ooredoo expects its initial investment to generate about $600 million in cumulative EBITDA during the first five years, based on current estimates.

The first phase of Zankore is expected to provide about 200 megawatts of AI computing capacity in the first half of 2027. It will use NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 systems and DSX MaxLPS technology, which is designed to improve computing capacity by optimising power use across GPUs.

Ooredoo said the investment will expand its digital infrastructure portfolio beyond telecom connectivity, international fibre, subsea cables and data centres. AI computing will become an additional infrastructure layer linking networks, data centres and computing capacity.

Group CEO Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo said the investment supports the company’s strategy to expand its digital infrastructure business and gain greater exposure to AI assets. He said Southeast Asia offers strong growth potential as demand for AI infrastructure increases.

Ooredoo selected Indonesia because of its expanding digital economy and growing need for AI computing capacity. The company expects Zankore to expand across Southeast Asia over time.

Ooredoo received financial advice on the deal from FTI Capital Advisors.
