UAE’s Barakah Plant Emerges as Major Source of Carbon-Free Electricity

Prime Highlights-

  • The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant now supplies nearly 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity through carbon-free power generation.
  • The project supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy by reducing emissions and strengthening long-term energy security.

Key Facts-

  • Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is the first peaceful nuclear power plant in the Arab world.
  • The plant generates around 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually and prevents more than 22 million tons of carbon emissions each year.

Background-

The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant has strengthened the United Arab Emirates’ position as a global clean energy leader after all four reactors at the facility became fully operational.

The project is now one of the country’s most important energy and infrastructure developments, supporting electricity production, climate goals and long-term economic growth.

Located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, the Barakah plant produces around 40 terawatt-hours of carbon-free electricity each year, supplying nearly 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs.

Officials said the plant also helps prevent more than 22 million tons of carbon emissions annually, supporting the country’s environmental and sustainability targets.

The UAE launched its peaceful nuclear energy programme to diversify electricity sources and reduce dependence on natural gas. Energy experts said the project improves energy security by providing stable electricity supplies while protecting the economy from fluctuations in global fuel prices. The plant is also expected to operate for several decades, making it a long-term national investment.

The project forms a major part of the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy and supports industries requiring reliable electricity, including aluminum, steel and petrochemicals.

Authorities said the plant was developed under strict international safety standards and underwent hundreds of technical inspections and reviews.

The Barakah project has also supported local industries and technical training by helping develop expertise in nuclear engineering, cybersecurity and advanced technologies.

Officials said the project reflects the UAE’s wider strategy of building a knowledge-based economy focused on clean energy, innovation and sustainable infrastructure development.
