Background:
The UAE will provide $1 billion to develop Yemen’s energy sector. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed this initiative, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan is closely following up. This shows the UAE’s ongoing support to improve life and promote sustainable development for the people of Yemen.
The announcement occurred during the UAE’s participation in the inaugural Yemen National Energy Conference (YFNEC 2025). Mohamed Hamad Al Zaabi, UAE Ambassador to Yemen, said the funding will help Yemen strengthen its sustainable energy systems, address sector challenges, and build partnerships between the public and private sectors.
Yemen’s Prime Minister, Salem bin Braik, welcomed the UAE’s long-standing support and said the investment will help the country move towards growth, stability, and stronger public services. The event saw wide international participation, including UN representatives and global partners working to improve Yemen’s energy and electricity infrastructure.
According to Ali Alshimmari, Managing Director and CEO of Global South Utilities, the UAE’s new investment portfolio will supply clean energy to between two and three million homes through solar and wind projects. The initiative is expected to create more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs while reducing over 17 million tonnes of carbon emissions and saving more than 1.25 billion kWh of fuel.
He added that the company has already developed major solar projects in Aden and Shabwa, which together will deliver clean electricity to more than one million homes. The company will build new solar panels, improve storage, and upgrade distribution networks.
The UAE’s broader goal is to help Yemen build a modern, reliable, and sustainable energy system that supports economic growth and attracts long-term investment.
